The Nightborn, a new theater company has announced its debut with the world premiere of Spark by Angela Santillo. Just in time for the Valentine season, mythology and city life collide to explore issues of love and sex in Spark. Directed by ElizaBeth Miller and featuring a creative team of dynamic emerging artists, the play is set to open at Access Theater on February 16th at 8pm.
About the show: "Set one hundred years in the future, Spark takes place on a frigid February 14th night. A drunk Cupid loiters on a city street, woefully devoted to a world that has evolved to regard relationships as senseless, intercourse as sport, and love as dead. In this setting full of sex crazed Takers and arrow stricken Lovesicks, Aphrodite returns after a century long absence to convince Cupid to abandon mortal love, once and for all."
About the cast and creatives: Director ElizaBeth Miller gives life to this moving dark comedy. Also the Artistic Director of The Nightborn, she holds an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College where she most notably directed Tallgrass Gothic. She has directed shows in her home state of Texas and most recently directed as part of New Georges' Perform-A-Thon. Angela Santillo also holds an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and her plays have been developed and produced by Pan Asian Rep, foolsFURY Theater, Playwrights Center of San Francisco, the Communal Space Project, and Saint Mary's College of California, where she was a national finalist for the Mark David Cohen Award and given a Distinguished Achievement Award in Playwriting by the Kennedy Center's American College Theater Festival.
Leading the cast of Spark are Malcolm Pepin as the poetry spewing, wine filled Cupid (aka Cup) and Meg Fee as the pleading, slowly deteriorating Aphrodite (aka Aphro). Playing the part of misfortunate Lovesicks are Alexandra Delare as the shot-thru-the-heart Dalia and Winston Shaw as the shot-thru-the-butt Cash. Completing the cast and playing multiple roles, including the insatiable Takers, are Calder Shilling, Chelsea Militano, Cindy N. Kawasaki, and Michael Kreitzinger.
Preparing Spark for the stage is a creative team with extensive Off-Broadway credits, as well assistant credits on Broadway shows: Aimee Dombo (sets), Ali Lucas (metal work and lighting), and Scott O'Brien (composer and sound design).
