Soho Rep., in association with John Adrian Selzer, presents the U.S. premiere of Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. by award-winning British playwright Alice Birch. Originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the American premiere is directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, 30, with both rigor and a playful spirit, and features Daniel Abeles, Molly Bernard, Eboni Booth and Jennifer Ikeda. The production introduces American audiences to Birch, 29, who was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2012 and 2015 and is a co-winner of the 2014 George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright.
Soho Rep Artistic Director Sarah Benson says, "In Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again., Alice Birch uses her wild theatricality and huge sense of humor to take on knotty questions about gender with a bold thesis: the words we use to describe the world we live in actually shape its power structures and inequalities. At the same time, the work is not a didactic exercise-for the audience or its creative team. The act of bringing Alice's play to life is an inherently collaborative feat. The play has no fixed location, cast of characters or even a recommended cast size. Instead, it dares a director and talented ensemble to build upon a rapid-fire collection of scenes to create a dizzying and exhilarating event."
Fellow British playwright and Tony-winner Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) says, "There are few writers who have emerged in British theatre in the past five years who have excited me as much as Alice Birch. She writes with a fearless political intelligence and an astonishing formal bravery. Her language is poised. Her structures are endlessly, restlessly inventive. And each invention is built on an urgent need to be heard with as much clarity as possible. Her work is smart, dangerous, sexy, angry and achieved. She makes me feel old in the most galvanizing way I can imagine."
The creative team for Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again.includes Adam Rigg (sets), Yi Zhao (lights), Kaye Voyce (costumes), Palmer Hefferan (sound), George Hoffmann and Greg Kozatek (props), Hannah Wasileski (projection), J. David Brimmer (fight choreography), Lisa McGinn (production stage manager) and David Nelson (production manager).
