Spandex, a new musical set amidst the blistering world of the 1980's aerobics movement, will have its debut reading for industry on Thursday, June 14th, at 440 Studios (440 Lafayette Street).
In the shadow of the cold war, amidst a world of budding conference call technology, an aerobics instructor inspires her students but has lost confidence in herself. When her boss, Trip, pushes diet pills on her class and fires her for objecting, Lorraine must dig down to her core. Facing past demons, she steps out to challenge Trip in the only place he might be vulnerable: the 1987 Crystal Light National Aerobics Competition, hosted by
Alan Thicke.
The music in Spandex is a combination of licensed songs and several originals, including "Spandex" and "Step to the Left."
Cast will be led by
Lauren Lebowitz, (Title of Show),
Doug Shapiro (Finding Nemo) and
Graham Stevens (In Transit), as the conniving and detestable diet-pill guru: Trip Allen. The cast also features
Matt Bailey,
Bret Carr,
Melanie Kann, Natalie Bird, Molly Thomas,
Sol Baird, Douglas Goodhart, Sam Port and Kathleen Fiorito.
The show is written by
Daniel F. Levin (To Paint the Earth, Hee-Haw: It's a Wonderful Li_e) and Annie Grunow (aerobics specialist and Mr. Thicke authority). Musical Direction by Julian Blackmore and Direction by Mr. Levin.
