As part of its 40th Anniversary year, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) unveils the 2013 edition of the annual River To River Festival, Downtown's completely free summer arts festival. This year's edition takes place June 15-July 14 and presents a diverse collection of music, dance, theater, visual art, film and unique participatory experiences by both renowned and breakout artists from New York City and beyond.

The Festival seeks to encourage discovery and to engage, provoke and transform audiences, activating more than 25 indoor and outdoor locations from the Hudson River to the East River, from Governors Island to Chambers Street. For more than 100,000 attendees, River To River provides an intense and rewarding way to experience and discover Lower Manhattan's waterfronts, parks, plazas and other hidden treasures. Please scroll down for full Festival schedule.

Much more than a series of free events, River To River serves as an important platform for the arts sector in both the nurturing of new ideas and the extension of existing work by inviting artists to create site-responsive versions of premiere performances, translating pieces to public space and alternative sites in new and unexpected ways. Additionally, the spectrum of work represents all stages of the creative process, and audiences are encouraged to share in the artists' experiences and practice through work-in-progress showings, open studios, open rehearsals and workshops.

"River To River is as much about the built environment and neighborhoods between the Hudson and East rivers as it is about the diverse range of cultural experiences offered," says Sam Miller, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council President. "From large outdoor stages to storefronts, from university theaters to the intersection of Broad & Wall, River To River is often where you least expect it. This year, over 60 artists will respond to the iconic locations as well as timely social issues and ideas through their movement, projection, sculpture, writing and sound. Through River To River we encourage everyone to discover their own Lower Manhattan."

The annual River To River Festival is produced by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) in partnership with Founding Partners Arts Brookfield, Battery Park City Authority, and South Street Seaport, as well as Pace University and other program partners. Leadership support for the 2013 Festival is provided by the Alliance for Downtown New York, American Express, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and HUD, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Westfield World Trade Center, and in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Lead Media support is provided by THIRTEEN, WNYC and WQXR. A complete list of supporters may be found below.

Artist & Curator Laurie Anderson

This year introduces a new feature to the Festival: a series of events guest-curated by a well-known figure with a singular voice and artistic perspective. Iconic composer/musician/ performance artist Laurie Anderson performs two consecutive evenings (June 18 & 19) at Rockefeller Park with hand-selected guest artists including Gerry Leonard, Doug Wieselman, Eyvind Kang and others to be announced, and then presents a curated series of projects on subsequent evenings.

June 20 will be an evening of music and cinema with Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sam Green and local musical outfits the Quavers and yMusic. June 21 brings a multimedia screening and performance of Christophe Chassol's original score/film INDIAMORE, and on June 22 Anderson presents Andrew Schneider's Tidal, a highly physical and technological multimedia theatrical experience. Finally, on June 21 & 22 Liubo Borissov & Konrad Kaczmarek invite participants to download an app in advance and take part in a parade through the streets of Lower Manhattan.

"There's almost nothing I love more than being outside on summer evenings and listening to music and watching films," Anderson says. "As a guest curator of the River To River Festival, I have a chance to draw some of my favorite artists together and showcase their incredible creativity to festival-goers in unique outdoor sites in Lower Manhattan."

Regarding her curatorial approach, Anderson notes, "I wanted to explore how artists use time in their work. Each guest artists in this series has a unique approach to time whether slowing it down, rolling it backwards, speeding it up, or pairing it with images in polyphonic ways. Perhaps, my real, and deeper motive is to create a floating atmosphere that extends the summer evening and makes it all the more dream-like and timeless."

Music

On June 16 the beloved Bang on a Can Marathon ushers in River To River's music offerings at Pace University's Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts. This year's Marathon is a non-stop, nine-hour super-mix of performances by the likes of Bang on a Can All-Stars.
