Poetic People Power will present its 14th annual show on October 26 at Theater at 224 Waverly Place in Manhattan. This year's show, Take Your Time, premieres new poems examining how our overworked culture and lack of leisure time is affecting our health, relationships, and communities. Inspired by the Take Back Your Time movement, this informative and engaging spoken word show explores the psychology, cultural differences, and consequences of time poverty. Tickets are $15 online at BrownPaperTickets.com and $20 at the door. The show starts at 8 PM.
For 14 consecutive years, Poetic People Power has creatively explored social and political topics, offering insight and solutions to issues that affect our everyday lives. Founded by Tara Bracco in 2003, Poetic People Power combines poetry and activism. Each year, a diverse group of poets are commissioned to write new poems about a social or political issue. The poems are then presented to a public audience in a professional spoken word show. Poetic People Power entertains and informs as it raises awareness on specific topics and engages audiences through the expressive art of poetry. Past shows include Tapped Out: Words About The Water Crisis (Bowery Poetry Club, 2009); Price Check: How We Became a Culture of Consumption (Producers Club, 2010); Invisible Chains: Inequality in America (Wild Project, 2013); Closed: NYC Shuts Its Doors To Artists (Theater 80, 2014); and #AntiSocial: The Dark Side of Social Media (Wild Project, 2015).
This year's poets include Bogar Alonso, Tara Bracco, Philippe Garcesto, Karla Jackson-Brewer, Angela Kariotis, Shane Michael Manieri, Scottt Raven, and Shetal Shah. Produced by Tara Bracco. Funding has been made possible by the Puffin Foundation.
