Playhouse Creatures Theatre Company has announced its annual From Page to Stage Festival of Original Work. This year's theme was "Love and Politics" and after receiving an impressive over 400 submissions in its open call for short plays this past summer, the company selected 7 ten minute plays to feature in this year's festival. The minimally staged festival will run one exclusive week during today, November 4th-9th and feature a company of twelve actors. The End Result is an exciting and entertaining week filled with diverse selections sure to entertain and bring these new writers into the spotlight!
They say the only certain things in life are death and taxes- well, they don't take a backseat to Love and Politics. Opening on Election Day, this year's timely collection of plays range in subject matter from one woman's creative solution to the deportation of children at the border; to a Senator trying to win the "gay vote"; to a stylized, lightning fast farce on turn of the century Russian politics.
The festival is about focusing on and celebrating the playwright, the written text, and the actor bringing it to life. It is the step before full production elements are implemented.
The selected playwrights represent various parts of the country, further adding to the spectrum of style and content. Four playwrights are from the general NYC area, one from Seattle, another from Iowa, and one from Washington D.C. The plays include: "Cross Guns Confession" by Cassandra Lewis, "The Big Ass Russian Novel" by Jake Rosenberg, "Heartland Votes" by Suzanne Bailie, "Temperance" by Gina Scanlon, "Gaza on the First Date" by Christopher Sullivan, "the home schooling of jonathan anderson" by Sean Christopher Lewis, and "Dos Gatos" by Megan O'Leary.
"The new works we present gives PCTC a great opportunity to give voice to seven wonderful playwrights- and provide employment for over twenty theatre artists," states Artistic Director Joseph W. Rodriguez. "...All of which ties in with our mission to develop new works and nurture our community."
The Ensemble of actors features veteran performers: Emily Dahlke, Jamie Dunn*, James Foster Jr.*, Hollie Harper, Gretchen Knapp, Sam Lubin, ,Jennylind Parris*, Paul Ricciardi*, Joseph W. Rodriguez*, Rick Schneider, Perri Yaniv*.
The Directors involved include: Janet Bobcean, Kenny Wade Marshall, and Sarah Koestner.
The bare bones festival will run one exclusive week: November 4th - 8th, at 8pm and Nov 9th at 3pm. With an additional 3pm matinee on Saturday November 8th, dedicated to an all-deaf audience, to benefit the NY Center for Law and Justice (advocates for the deaf community).
