Denman Turner Entertainment Group (DTEG, Inc.) and Rivers at Rehoboth are excited to present Son of a Preacher Man, written by Vascola Stoney with one performance, Friday, August 1st, on the Upper West Side. Scroll down for a sneak peek at the cast in rehearsal!
Adapted by Kellie Turner, she described the essence of the work. "The story deals with stigma itself, and it sheds light on the mindset of a tortured soul and how family, and society, can be cruel and leading to deadly consequences," she said.
Son of a Preacher Man explores what happens as a father's disappointment leads down the road of shame--- when his eldest son doesn't quite follow the path he has laid out for him. Barnes Jr. (Duane Burress, Jr.), a preacher's son from a generation of preachers, struggles with living up to his father's expectations after making choices which vary too greatly. He is ultimately forced to choose between the callings placed on his life, or to follow his own heart--- alienating his father and maybe even God.
When asked about the creative process through every stage of development, Dominique Denman replied, "I like that every piece written for the stage gives way to creativity between producers, directors and actors, and that the audience is privy to the picture captured once these components splash the bare stage with a rainbow of colors."
Duane Burress, Jr. leads the cast, and spoke of his journey into the role. "I have never played a character that demanded so much emotion, so many objectives and various tactics. Seeing it all come to life is incredible."
The drama is directed by Mrs. Denman, with an adaption by Denman and Mrs. Turner, and is inspired by the tumultuous life of Andre Brown. Denman directed the premiere production of Son of a Preacher Man for the And Company Theater in Philadelphia, PA and the New York premiere at The Riverside Theater in 2012. Denman is one of the Executive Producers for the new musical Stormy which is in development for Broadway. Marcus Dargan, assistant-directs.
Mr. Dargan spoke of Burress, Jr's contributions to the interpretation. "It is fun watching him as an actor, making discoveries and transforming into a character I think is so far from his own nature and personal experiences. He has brought a wonderfully exciting energy and truthful presence to the role."
Nefertiti Warren reprises her role as Allison for the upcoming production. "Being in the production two years ago, it's interesting to see the dynamic that this ensemble brings to the performance."
The play features Duane Burress, and the cast includes: Angelique Chapman, Geraldine Flood, Leroy Graham, La Trina Rice, Douglas Sanders, Tasha Michelle, Miriam Tabb, Nefertiti Warren and Deon Williams (Cast).
There will be a single performance on Friday, August 1, 2014, 7:30 PM at The Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew, located at 263 W 86th St (Broadway and West End Aves.), New York, NY 10024.
