Pace Presents Features TALES FROM THE SAHEL, 10/21

On October 21 renowned Senegalese star Baaba Maal brings Tales from the Sahel: An Evening with Baaba Maal, his acoustic evening of stories and songs, to Lower Manhattan's Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts as part of the inaugural Pace Presents season. The evening marks the only New York area performance of the intimate, two-part program, which comes to U.S. audiences following a successful U.K. tour.

Tales from the Sahel begins with Maal in conversation with noted journalist and author Chris Salewicz discussing personal, social and political issues. The discussion features ancient Fula stories from Senegal, and explores how such mythological tales have evolved over time and come to influence modern Africa. Maal is then joined on stage by his longstanding percussionist Mamadou Sarr and multi-instrumentalist Jim Palmer for an acoustic set featuring songs that have been influenced by this ancient storytelling tradition.

Maal has been making music for nearly two decades and has received critical acclaim for releases ranging from contemporary Afropop to time-honored African music. Having studied in both Dakar and Paris, as well as with griot musician Mansour Seck, Maal is known for his unique fusion of funk, rock and blues with the beats and melodies of West Africa. He has toured extensively in Africa, Europe, the U.K. and the U.S. and is also a passionate advocate for African youth, families and the future of the African continent. As Youth Emissary for the United Nations' Development Program Maal has spoken extensively on the subject of HIV/AIDS.

Tales from the Sahel: An Evening with Baaba Maal is presented as part of the Pace Presents 2011-2012 season, throughout which Lower Manhattan audiences will experience some of today's leading innovators in American and world music, dance and the visual arts.

In this intimate two-part evening, Maal begins by discussing personal, social and political issues with noted music journalist and author Chris Salewicz. He is then joined on stage by his longstanding percussionist Mamadou Sarr and multi-instrumentalist Jim Palmer for an acoustic set that fuses funk, rock and blues with the beats and melodies of West Africa.
