THE PUPPET CYCLE: Small World Stories features a trio of original family-friendly marionette plays by Dipika Guha and Jen Silverman.
Today, Octopus Theatricals, in partnership with Phantom Limb Company and Arts Brookfield, announced a series of new mobile puppet performances collectively titled, "THE PUPPET CYCLE: Small World Stories." Commissioned by Arts Brookfield, the performances are free, open to the public and will premiere at Brookfield Properties' Manhattan West, Zuccotti Park, and Brooklyn Commons in late July and August.
THE PUPPET CYCLE: Small World Stories features a trio of original family-friendly marionette plays by Dipika Guha and Jen Silverman that will travel between properties via a specially adapted cargo bike with a solar-powered, moveable stage.
This bill of marionette plays will tour Brookfield Properties locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn this summer.
Supporting innovation in music, dance, theater, film, and visual art by pushing boundaries to create unique works of art and cultural experiences, Arts Brookfield has come together with New York City-based partnership, Phantom Limb Company, and producer Octopus Theatricals, to present a series of brand-new puppet performances that bring to life two original short plays by Jen Silverman (2022 Guggenheim Fellow in Drama; National Endowment for the Arts Fellow in prose) and Dipika Guha (inaugural recipient of The Lark's Shakespeare's Sister Playwriting Fellowship; Hodder Fellow at the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton), as well as a musical number. Known for its distinctive storytelling, social engagement, and sophisticated visual style, Phantom Limb Company's THE PUPPET CYCLE series features artist-created puppets and a team of renowned puppeteers including Rowan Magee, Leah Ogawa, and Erik Sanko.
Guaranteed to transport and delight, each playlet is a snapshot of living in this precious, precarious moment. Jen Silverman's Frown Town looks at the upside of feeling down, and Dipika Guha's Elephantasia features a pachyderm who dreams of flight. With characteristic humor and a tinge of darkness, THE PUPPET CYCLE: Small World Stories locates hope in the shadow of so much uncertainty. Characters are voiced by Andy Groteleuschen, Teresa Avia Lim, Adrianna Mitchell and L Morgan Lee.
"I am thrilled to combine our creative and producing partnership with Arts Brookfield with that of Phantom Limb Company, whose artistry has been central to the work of Octopus Theatricals since our inception. The puppet cycle is a natural evolution for their work, combining their exceptional craft, singular vision and their commitment to create environmentally sustainable theater, " said Mara Isaacs, founder and director of Octopus Theatricals.
"We are thrilled to premiere THE PUPPET CYCLE: Small World Series this week, with the first performance at Brookfield Properties' newest development, Manhattan West," said Elysa Marden, Senior Vice President, Arts Brookfield for Brookfield Properties. "It has been a pleasure working with the creative minds at Phantom Limb Company and we look forward to offering this captivating, relevant, compelling summer performance series to New Yorkers and visitors at no cost."
As in all of Phantom Limb productions, and in line with Brookfield Properties' sustainability efforts, THE PUPPET CYCLE brings an environmental focus to bear. In a departure from the scale of more recent work - such as the critically acclaimed Environmental Trilogy - the feeling strived for in these performances is intimate and engaging.
