NYU Skirball to Host Run of ANALOGY TRILOGY  Image

NYU Skirball will present two marathon performances of Bill. T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company's acclaimed Analogy Trilogy, on September 22 and 23 at 3:00 pm. This is a rare opportunity to see the three parts of the trilogy performed as a whole and features the NYC premiere of Ambros: The Emigrant, the work's final piece. The complete trilogy will run 6½ hours (including a 90-minute dinner break) and is made up of Dora: Tramontane, Lance: Pretty aka the Escape Artist and Ambros: The Emigrant (NYC premiere).

Analogy Trilogy, inspired by W.G. Sebald's The Emigrants, was created by Bill T. Jones, Associate Artistic Director Janet Wong, and the company, over the course of four years. It combines dance, theater and oral history in an investigation of memory, storytelling and form. Performed to live music composed by Nick Hallett, the complete trilogy searches for the connection between three varying stories, focusing on memory and the effect of events on the actions of individuals. Jones continues his exploration of how text, storytelling and movement pull and push against each other and how another experience can be had through the combination and recombination of these elements.

ANALOGY TRILOGY:

Dora: Tramontane

Based on an oral history Jones conducted with 98-year old Dora Amelan, Dora is a meditation on perseverance, resourcefulness and resilience while suggesting the amorphous nature of memory.

Lance: Pretty aka the Escape Artist

Lance, based on an oral history Jones conducted with his nephew, Lance T. Briggs, is a tragic, yet humorous journey through the sex trade, drug use and excess during the 1980s.

Ambros: The Emigrant

Ambrose is a fictionalized history that examines trauma and its effects on the course of an individual's life, weaving together story, character, multi-media and song. Composer and vocalist Nick Hallett has set passages of the story to music and will be joined by pianist Emily Manzo and all the members of the company performing an original song cycle that partners with their movement, both as soloists and in a ghostly choir.

Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, founded in 1982, was born out of an 11-year collaboration between Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane (1948-1988). During this time, they redefined the duet form and foreshadowed issues of identity, form and social commentary that would change the face of American dance. The company has performed worldwide in over 200 cities in 40 countries on every major continent and is recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the dance-theater world.

The repertory of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company is widely varied in its subject matter, visual imagery and stylistic approach to movement, voice and stagecraft and includes music-driven works as well as works using a variety of texts. The Company has been acknowledged for its intensely collaborative method of creation that has included artists as diverse as Keith Haring, Cassandra Wilson, The Orion String Quartet, the Chamber Society of Lincoln Center, Fred Hersch and Jenny Holzer, among others. Jay Wegman is the Director of NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Prior to Skirball, he served as Director of the Abrons Art Center for ten years. During his tenure, Abrons was awarded various honors, including a 2014 OBIE Award for Innovative Excellence and a 2015 Bessie Award for Best Production. He was also a Fellow at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and for over a decade served as the first Canon for Liturgy and the Arts at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. He is the recipient of the 2015 FRANKY award for "making a long-term, extraordinary impact on contemporary theatre and performance in New York City." While not a performer, he has appeared in Brian Roger's film "Screamers" (2018), Sibyl Kempson's "12 Shouts to the Ten Forgotten Heavens" (2017), and "Romper Room" (1969).
