The new musical opera with book and libretto by Anita Velez-Mitchell, music by Dean Landon and Anika Paris, orchestrations and arrangements by Dean Landon, TEMPLE OF THE SOULS premieres December 8, at the West End Theatre in New York, NY.
In this musical opera, TEMPLE OF THE SOULS, the audience is transported back to the land of early Boriken to discover beautiful Amada, the daughter of an important Conquistador, and Guario, a handsome young Taíno, who meet at the infamous Temple and fall in love. This Romeo and Juliet tale explores the conflict between the Taínos, the indigenous people of Puerto Rico, and the Spaniards who stole their land, raped their women, and drove them to their deaths. With original music, traditional Taino arreyto dance, masks and a cast of fifteen Multistages brings this story to life.. Anita Velez-Mitchell has been working with Taino Nation tribe members on cultural authenticity, and has infused Taino and Spanish language into the work. TEMPLE OF THE SOULS is the first musical opera of its kind written by a Puerto Rican about the colonization of Puerto Rico.
