Television and stage stars Laurie Metcalf and French Stewart will star in the upcoming production of Justin Tanner's VOICE LESSONS, presented at Studio@Theatre Row beginning May 22nd. The show will run through May 31st.
Justin Tanner infuses his quirky insight and jaundiced sense of humor within the hilarious machinations of self-deluded community theater actress Ginny (Laurie Metcalf) and her catatonically despairing vocal coach Nate (French Stewart).
The Hollywood Reporter called Tanner's play "A comic gem in every department" and stated it was "about as funny as any play has a right to be." LA Weekly proclaimed that VOICE LESSONS was "wildly entertaining". Variety called the play "uproarious and compelling".
VOICE LESSONS concerns Virginia, a deluded community musical theater diva, and Nate, the put-upon vocal coach to whom she offers triple scale to transform her into a star. Problems only compound for this mismatched twosome when Cheryl, Virginia?s theatrical nemesis, battles Virginia for Nate?s attention and affections. Laurie Metcalf (star of the original Los Angeles production) has said of the play, "It?s Educating Rita where no one learns a thing."
Laurie Metcalf is widely known for her performance as Jackie Harris in the comedy series Roseanne. However, she is also a major force in Chicago theater, probably best known for her critically acclaimed performance in the 1983 revival of 'Balm in Gilead'. Broadway theatre credits include 'Brighton Beach Memoirs', 'November', and 'My Thing of Love'.
Tickets for the production are $18 and may be purchased online at www.ticketcentral.com.
