La MaMa and UniArt will present the world premiere production of HIERONYMUS, a new play about the life and work of Hieronymus Bosch, written and directed by OBIE Award Winner Nic Ularu, January 20 - 29, 2012 at La MaMa Club, 74A E. 4th Street, New York, NY.
HIERONYMUS is a visual performance that recompose from a puzzle of situations, the life and work of Hieronymus Bosch, revealing the condition of the artist in relation to society and his private life. Using elements of black theater, video projections and giant puppets, "Hieronymus" recreates Bosch’s grotesque and tragic imaginary in a fantastic universe that incorporates the sacred, the profane, the symbol and the metaphor of his paintings.
The cast of HIERONYMUS features Paul Kaufmann, Jen Burry, Richard Jennings, Paul Kelly, Ryan Krause and Park Bucker.
Nic Ularu is the recipient of the OBIE award for outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater in New York (2003) and has extensive playwright and director credits in USA and Europe, including theatres in Sweden, Northern Ireland and Romania. His recent freelance work as playwright and director includes several acclaimed productions at LaMaMa - New York, Teatrul Foarte Mic, Bucharest - Romania, “O” Teatret - Sweden, National Theatre of Constanta - Romania, and National Theatre of Cluj - Romania. His play “Cherry Orchard Sequel” produced at LaMaMa got the New York Times theatre critics pick in 2008. In 2009 Nic directed the play at The National Theatre of Cluj – Romania, and it is in the theatre repertory since its acclaimed opening. “Cherry Orchard Sequel” was translated in Russian and Polish and will be produced in Moscow in the fall of 2012. Besides his national and international playwright / director activity Nic Ularu is a scenographer. Ularu’s designs appeared in the USA national entries at the Prague Quadrennial International Exhibitions of scenography in 2007, 2003 and 1998. In 2005 he co-designed the exhibit and designed the poster of the World Stage Design Exhibition, Toronto – Canada. He was appointed by United States Institute of Theatre Technology as the leading designer and curator of the USA National Exhibit at the Prague Quadrennial International Exhibition of 2007.
Set Design is by Heather Abraham, Costume Design is by Lisa Martin Stuart, Lighting Design is by Aaron Pelzek, Video Design is by Simon Tarr, Sound Design is by Walter Clissen. The Production Manager is K. Dale White and the Stage Manager is Christine Jacky.
Performances of HIERONYMUS are on Fridays and Saturdays at 10PM, and Sundays at 5:30PM.
