Kirby THEATER COMPANY will present Alan Ball's Five Women Wearing the Same Dress at Duo Theatre. Previews begin October 29. Opens November 5.
Before winning an Oscar for writing American Beauty, before creating the smash HBO shows Six Feet Under and True Blood, Alan Ball wrote Five Women Wearing the Same Dress. Five Women is a typically Ball-esque comedy-drama about five bridesmaids in a Knoxville, Tennessee mansion escaping from the reception to a bedroom upstairs. The characters explore sisterhood, lost dreams, and dark secrets, while making cutting, often hilarious, observations on life, love, sex, marriage, and religion. Five Women showcases Ball's characteristic genius for using a single phrase to turn comedy into drama and then back again.
The production is directed by John Gallagher, who for 30 years has been a well-known New York director, writer, producer, and author. Gallagher is known for discovering young talent, including Amanda Peet, Zach Braff, Gretchen Mol, John Leguizamo, and Denis Leary. He wrote and directed Blue Moon, starring Ben Gazzara and Rita Moreno, and also directed East of Evil, Punk City, and Unspeakable Ways at the West Bank Theatre in Manhattan. His articles on films and filmmaking have appeared in many magazines, including Rolling Stone, American Cinematographer, and Millimeter. John teaches at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre and One on One NYC and has previously taught at the School of Visual Arts.
Five Women Wearing the Same Dress stars an ensemble cast of new artists including Stefano Da Fre, Darla Delane, Allie Dunbar, Kate Eisenhower, Krissy Garber, and Lauren Schacher.
The producer, Krissy Garber, graduated in May from The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. While commiserating with a fellow actress about the less-than-scintillating projects for which they were auditioning, they decided to take matters into their own hands. Their goal: to find a play with a powerful female lead-and in Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, they found not one, but five, strong female characters. It was love at first sight, and Krissy knew she had to bring this play to life. The show will be presented at the Duo Theatre, 62 East 4th Street, New York, NY. Previews begin October 29. Performances run from November 5 through November 22-Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 PM, Sunday at 2 PM. Tickets are $18 in advance, $25 at the door.
