Beautiful Soup Theater will present the World Premiere workshop production of
Steven Carl McCasland's Little Wars. The limited engagement will play
Roy Arias Stage II Theatre beginning tonight, April 23rd. Beautiful Soup is best known for reviving lost or oft-forgotten works, but occasionally presents workshops of new plays and musicals.
In this imagined meeting of the minds,
Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas have invited playwright
Lillian Hellman, satirist
Dorothy Parker and novelist
Agatha Christie to their country home in France on a cold March night in 1939. Tensions are high, the booze is flowing and Europe is on the brink of war. When a mysterious woman arrives and prompts their questions, the curious writers expose more of themselves than they've ever put on the page.
Steven Carl McCasland's last play, neat & tidy, premiered at the
Gene Frankel Theatre in spring of 2012 to critical acclaim and was named one of
Examiner.com's Top Ten Dramatic Picks of the Year. His Parisian adaptation of Alice in Wonderland enjoyed an extended run at the SoHo Playhouse in 2011.
The production will star Maggie Wirth as
Gertrude Stein and
Kimberly Faye Greenberg (Lift, One Night With
Fanny Brice) as
Lillian Hellman. Celebrated Alabaman-stage actress Dorothy Weems, who is best known for her one-woman play set in 1940's Tangier, will make her New York stage debut as
Dorothy Parker. Additional casting and creatives will be announced at a later date.
