Eighteen of the theatre industry's highly regarded playwrights, theatrical agents and artistic directors will jury the 40 short plays featured in the 36th Annual SAMUEL FRENCH INC. OFF OFF BROADWAY SHORT PLAY FESTIVAL beginning July 19th at the Lion Theatre on Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street). Six winners will be chosen to have their plays licensed and published by Samuel French, Inc.
The judges include playwrights Adam Bock (A Small Fire, The Drunken City), Cusi Cram (A Lifetime Burning, Fuente), Bekah Brunstetter (Oohrah!), Matthew Burnett (Theophilus North), Lloyd Suh (American Hwangap), and Kia Corthron (A Cool Dip in the Barren Saharan Crick); theatrical agents Jonathan Lomma (William Morris Endeavor Entertainment), Thomas Pearson (International Creative Management), Beth Blickers (Abrams Artists Agency), Jonathan Mills (Paradigm), Alexis Williams (Bret Adams, Ltd.), and Barbara Hogenson (Barbara Hogenson Agency); and artistic directors Paige Evans (LCT3), Mark Hoebee (Paper Mill Playhouse), Susan Bernfield (New Georges), Jeff Zinn (Wellfleet Harbor Theatre), Kevin Cochran (Grove Theatre Center) and Katherine Kovner (The Playwrights Realm). The 40 plays presented in SAMUEL FRENCH INC. OFF OFF BROADWAY SHORT PLAY FESTIVAL have been chosen from over 1,000 submissions by playwriting workshops, university theatre programs, and professional companies from across the country. The Off Off Broadway Festival started in 1975 and is Manhattan's most established short play festival. Hundreds of theatre companies and schools have participated in the Festival's first thirty-five years, including companies from coast to coast and abroad. This Festival has served as a doorway to future success for many aspiring writers. Since its inception, 187 plays from the Festival have been published, and many of the participants have become established, award-winning playwrights including Theresa Rebeck, Shirley Lauro, Bekah Brunstetter, Steve Yockey, David Johnston and Sheila Callaghan.
