John Jay College presents Stephen Adly Guirgis' Den of Thieves, directed by Lorraine Moller.
Den Of Thieves opens November 30, 2011 and runs through December 3, 2011 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater, 899 Tenth Avenue (between 58th and 59th Streets).
Stephen Adly Guirgis' outrageous dark comedy takes us into the world of Maggie, a newly single, junk-food-binging kleptomaniac looking to change her life. Paul is an overly passionate, formerly four-hundred-pound sponsor in a 12 Step Program for recovering thieves. Rounding out the rag-tag team are Flaco, Maggie's charismatic wannabe Puerto Rican ex-boyfriend; and Boochie, Flaco's new girlfriend, a topless dancer with a traumatic past and an affinity for fame, fortune and fur. With $750,000 in unprotected drug money sitting in a safe guarded by an easily distracted crackhead, Flaco convinces the crew that stealing the money should be a "piece of !@#$ing cake!" When things don't quite go according to plan, this squabbling quartet of unlucky thieves find themselves tied to chairs at the mercy of Louie "The Little Tuna" Pescatore, a reluctant, donut-ingesting heir to the criminal empire run by his father-"The Big Tuna"-who has left him in charge for the weekend. The penalty for stealing from the Tuna is death…but the Little Tuna has gone a little soft and considers joining the Program! The struggle for self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-love produces a high-octane battle for survival and recovery that's not resolved until the last donut is eaten.
Other well known plays by Stephen Adly Guirgis include Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train and Our Lady of 121st Street. The playwright is a native New Yorker who lives in nearby Hell's Kitchen.
The cast includes Erika Leigh (Maggie), Pedro Morel (Paul), Usman Ghafoor (Paul), Jose Espinal (Flaco), Bianca Rodriguez (Boochie), Carla Soraide (Boochie), Christopher Balda (Louie "The Little Tuna" Pescatore), Kenneth Beattie (Sal), and Greg Donaldson (Al "The Big Tuna" Pescatore).
