Early-career writer and actor Jacob Grover announced via Facebook that his full-length play "Demonstration of a Drunk Driving Accident," directed by Joel Kirk, will be running for four nights at the Alchemical Theater Laboratory. The downtown Manhattan theater will host the play in its premiere performance space for one show a night Thursday, September 21st through Sunday, September 24th at 8:00pm, 8:00pm, 7:00pm, and 7:00pm, respectively, running approximately 90 minutes.
"Demonstration of a Drunk Driving Accident" centers on a group of high school seniors attempting to stage an informational mock car crash to spread awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving in anticipation of their prom. But their once-conventional rehearsal begins to break down as the speckled record of the groups' past comes to light, shattering the bonds of friendship they once thought impermeable and the illusion that their youth make them invincible. The piece grapples not only with the fleeting nature of adolescent innocence but the meta-theatrical implications of "scared-straight" programs, questioning the merit and efficacy of didactic pseudo-theater. The material derives from Grover's own experience with a similar type of program put on by his high school while he was a student.
The play features Kendall DuPre, Chapman Hyatt, MiChelle Davis, John DiMino, and Stephanie Wurster, all alumni (barring DuPre, who is in her final semester) of New York Univeristy's Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama. Director Joel Kirk hails from Ball State University in Indiana, where he graduated a year early with a BS in theatrical directing and has been an active director and creative in New York's theater scene since his arrival to the east coast.
Grover himself is also an alumnus of Tisch, graduating in May of 2016 with a BFA in dramatic writing with a concentration in playwriting and studying under playwrights Lucas Hnath and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, among others. His recent credits include acting in New York productions such as "Pop Punk High" at The PIT Loft, "Tim Kaine Sits In Front of a Mirror and Studied His Face" at the Brick Theater and Dixon Place, "Blatantly Blaine" and "The Disembodied Hand the Fisted Everyone to Death - The Musical!" at The PIT.
