A Tony Award-winning Broadway musical introduced mainstream U.S. audiences to Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti, but long before FELA! hit the boards, Brooklyn's DJ Rich Medina brought Fela's music to dance floors in America and around the world with the groundbreaking Jump n Funk Afrobeat party.
Since 2001, Jump n Funk has grown from an underground event in New York to an in-demand party in cities across the country, in Canada, and throughout Europe and Asia.
Now Medina brings to Harlem a special edition of his signature dance party outfitted with a live musical performance by the 13-piece Afrobeat ensemble led by former Fela Kuti guitarist Kaleta and Zozo Afro Beat.
This special 10th anniversery event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at harlemstage.org or by phone at 212-281-9240 x 19 or 20.
The Gatehouse at Harlem Stage is located at 150 Convent Ave. at W. 135th St. in New York City.
