MAN IN SNOW - the newest work by celebrated playwright Israel Horovitz (OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES) - will receive its New York premiere this fall at La MaMa's First Floor Theatre (77 E. 4 St.) with previews beginning tonight, November 11, prior to opening night November 14, 2016. Mr. Horovitz also directs the play.
This production represents a reunion, of sorts, with Mr. Horovitz and La MaMa: it was in 1967 that late La MaMa founder Ellen Stewart commissioned and produced the world-premiere of the playwright's LINE, now in its 45th year on stage in NYC at 13th Street Rep.
MAN IN SNOW - which comes to NYC in its acclaimed world-premiere production from Gloucester Stage Company in Massachusetts - is presented by La MaMa in association with Barefoot Theatre Company and Compagnia Horovitz-Paciotto.
The cast for MAN IN SNOW includes Will Lyman (Commonwealth Shakespeare Company/Boston), Ron Nakahara (SLEEPWALK WITH ME), Paul O'Brien (THE WEIR, Irish Rep), Sandra Shipley (BLITHE SPIRIT on Broadway), Ashely Risteen (APPROPRIATE/Boston) and Francisco Solorzano (GLOUCESTER BLUE, Gloucester Stage Co).
In MAN IN SNOW, David, recently retired and mourning the loss of his young son, revisits Mt. McKinley in Alaska, a mountain he summited at age 19. He's not climbing this visit. Instead he is guiding a group of Japanese honeymooners who hope to conceive a child under the spell of the Northern Lights.
A prolific playwright and filmmaker, Mr. Horovitz was most recently represented on the NY stage last summer with the world-premiere of the hit comedy OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES starring Estelle Parsons, Judith Ivey and Angelina Fiordellisi Off-Broadway at Cherry Lane Theatre. His 70-plus works for the stage include LINE (now in its 45th year in NYC), PARK YOUR CAR IN HARVARD YARD starring Jason Robards and Judith Ivey, THE INDIAN WANTS THE BRONX, THE PRIMARY ENGLISH CLASS, THE WIDOW'S BLIND DATE and NORTH SHORE FISH. His films include MY OLD LADY, which he wrote and directed, AUTHOR! AUTHOR!, THE STRAWBERRY STATEMENT and SUNSHINE. He holds the distinction of being the most-produced American playwright in French theater history.
MAN IN SNOW has lighting design by Niluka Hotaling; sound design by David Reiffel; scenic design by Jenna McFarland Lord; and costume design by Chelsea Kerl. Original music is by Julia Kent.
MAN IN SNOW will perform Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2 pm, from Nov. 11 through the 27, with an added opening night performance on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 ($20 students/seniors).
