The IRT Theater presents Veronica Cooper & Adam Thomas Smith's Wake Up Call, a 90-minute contemporary play set in the lobby of a luxury boutique hotel in New York City. In the midst of an unexpected double shift (on Christmas Eve, no less) a group of degenerate hotel employees stumble their way through an unusual night of service. It's a "coming of age when you're already of age" story. Sometimes it takes a miracle to grow the hell up. While navigating through the misadventures of the evening, from outlandish guests to unpredictable coworkers, we follow their journey into adulthood. Sort of.
The project represents the first writing collaboration for Cooper and Smith, who have taken inspiration from their past experience working in hotels to the stage. "This started from sharing the moments, horror stories and experiences that came when we were both just getting to New York," said Cooper. "It was a chance to revisit some of those awkward and life setting moments, that at the time felt so poignant, and turn into something a bit more fun."
"This is a time of year that can be hard. The extra travel, family time, office holiday parties-Wake Up Call is a great escape from all of that and a chance to just laugh and remember what it was like to feel the world on your shoulder while you casually ignored all responsibility," said Smith.
The show makes its New York debut at IRT Theater after a previous workshop performance with Wolfbane Productions in Appomattox, Virginia this past summer. "Wake Up Call, is a great Christmas style show that's wonderfully raunchy and really full of heart," said Dustin Williams, the Producing Artistic Director of Wolfbane Productions who helped to bring the show to VA.
Wake Up Call, joins the IRT Theater as part of its 3B Development Series, running 11 shows from December 9th through 18th.
