HERE Announces 2019 Culturemart Festival Starting March 15 Image

Each year, HERE offers a window into the creative process of their nationally recognized HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP). During the Culturemart Festival, running March 18-23, process becomes the focus, inviting audiences to experience work at various stages of development on their way to full productions. Featuring new works by Baba Israel, Spencer Lott & Maiko Kikuchi, Imani Uzuri, James Scruggs and Laura Peterson, this year's program features five adventurous workshop presentations that blur the boundaries between theatre, music, dance, opera and puppetry through explorations of the history of cannabis, WWII Japan-American relations, the iconography of the Black Madonna, exploits of gay sexuality, and the nature of Truth.

HERE's residency program commissions cross-disciplinary performance work from mid-career artists who develop their work over their two-to-three-year residencies. The annual Culturemart Festival is a vibrant festival offering a vital step in the evolution of this new work, delivering for both artists and audiences alike.

Resident artist projects seen at Culturemart culminate in full productions at HERE. This year's festival also features two works by HARP alumni James Scruggs and Laura Peterson, who return to HERE with new projects in development. Festival alumni include Young Jean Lee, Taylor Mac, Lisa D'Amour, Faye Driscoll, Erin Orr, Troika Ranch, Corey Dargel, Theatre of a Two-Headed Calf, and many more.

CULTUREMART 2019 takes place at HERE from March 18-23. Press are welcome to join for this year's Culturemart Kickoff Party on Monday, March 18 at 6:30pm.
