In the late 19th century, Henrietta Leavitt served as one of the women computers at the Harvard Observatory. She became focused on recording information about the stars and the new understanding of their significance. SILENT SKY showcases her remarkable talent, determination and ingenuity. Her discovery impacted the scientific progress that led to the Hubble Telescope and significantly contributed to current understanding of the universe. As a woman, she was not offered the Nobel Prize, but scientists today recognize her incredible contribution.
Today, eager to have a clear understanding of the giants of the past, Insight Theatre Company proudly brings Henrietta Leavitt's story to life on stage.
Gwen Wotawa, accomplished actor nominated for a St. Louis Theater Circle award and who recently played Gwendolyn Fairfax in INSIGHT's IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, plays Henrietta. Gwen brings a delightful warmth and joy to Henrietta, and in her convincing portrayal she reveals this scientist's humanity.
Alex Freeman, artistic director of Ozark Actors Theatre, plays the role of Peter Shaw - Henrietta's supervisor and romantic admirer. Henrietta's sister Margaret is played by Jen Theby Quinn, a St. Louis favorite actor and musician. Music brings a special element to this play as Margaret has longings to become a composer. Her interactions with Henrietta compliment the discovery of the stars.
Annie Cannon is the outspoken suffragette who contrasts Henrietta's quieter nature. Her spunk and clear-headed approach is well personified by Elizabeth Townsend. Elizabeth, a highly regarded regional actor, brings authenticity to the plight of the women computers. Like Henrietta, she is determined to accomplish all possible. Chrissy Steele, accomplished vocal-dialect coach and Professor of Acting at Principia University, rounds out the cast in the role of the Scottish Williamina, who works closely with Henrietta and Annie. Together they become a team and represent the way women compliment the needs of each other in work and friendship.
Maggie Ryan directs "Silent Sky" and is particularly proud of her stellar cast. "I chose this play because it demonstrates the importance of women in our history," Ryan explains. "Also, it concerns ideas about gender bias and the need for equanimity that is so relevant today. Profound wonder; innovative ideas , steadfast determination , Those are the characteristics of Henrietta Leavitt . A Woman of Science who changed out world. "Silent Sky" ignites inspiration to "reach for the stars." WE CAN DO IT!"
