Egg & Spoon Takes On Adventurous Three-Play Evening By New Playwright Amelia French Image

Amelia French is the perfect example of where theatre is headed, complete with her thoughtful characters in such adventurous circumstances. If you're an audience member interested in new theatre, you aren't going to want to miss Egg & Spoon's night of Amelia French, an evening of three plays, collectively called MORE & EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS.

A young person brings a tour group to the house where they grew up; generations of women can't agree on basic metaphysics; a boy invites a mother-shaped demon inside. A new kind of American cycle emerges from the mind of Amelia French-- cats banter with ghosts, perceptions compete viciously, and the weary bones of family drama dance anew.

"For our season opener, we were determined to push ourselves," director Catherine Giddings says. "Our company has simply never tried to produce a piece that's so long- three in one- and three new plays at that."

This theatrical evening gifts three completely different worlds, which span from old houses with historical anecdotes to returning ghosts and sassy cats. Each play explores numerous ideas including visibility, odd family dynamics, and the understanding of life and death, all told from completely different characters and points of view.

"This trilogy is something of an epic," Giddings states, "bouncing from the domestic to the metaphysical and the supernatural to the mundane. Typically an exciting evening at the theater for me involves the floor dropping away once or twice- Amelia seems to orchestrate this at every other turn. We're working through complex philosophies and abstractions here, but these plays also feel quite personal- not to mention they're really funny!"

In May of 2017, Egg & Spoon accepted a mission to become a home to young and hungry artists, desperate to challenge their skillset. New playwrights has started to become an important avenue as well, giving playwrights (along with those performers and designers) a place to challenge their normal, a place to take risks. "Egg & Spoon gave me a platform for my voice when many other theatre companies and collectives would not," says French. "I am so grateful that this collective exists to foster emerging talent and provide opportunities to young writers who have work that disrupts and reinvents theatre as we know it."
