Bad Quarto Productions, a theatre company specializing in performing modern theatre using Shakespearean staging techniques, will stage Cupid's Revenge, a play by successor-playwrights to William Shakespeare shortly after his retirement. Written by famous collaborators Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher, and first printed in 1615, Cupid's Revenge is a tale of love, revenge, and mortal folly that was highly influential to post-Shakespearean playwrights.
When the puritan princess of Lycia implores the Duke to ban the worship of Cupid, the god of love decides to show the kingdom just how sharp his arrows can be. But it won't just be bleeding hearts in Lycia by the time Cupid has taken his revenge.
Cupid's Revenge questions the ability of men to be masters of their own impulses, and whether or not anyone can ever be safe or free in a society governed by men who are slaves to their passions.
Cupid's Revenge will be staged in Bad Quarto Productions' signature style of combining modern text work with Shakespeare's staging conditions. Our performance combines Elizabethan language with the liveliness of improv to deliver productions of Shakespearean plays as intensely raw as their original stagings. Universal lighting, cross-gender casting, audience interaction, live acoustic music, and contemporary costumes will be combined to bring both this Renaissance play, and the Renaissance play-going experience to life this spring!

Of
Cupid's Revenge, Bad Quarto Productions' Artistic Director Tony Tambasco says "Beaumont and Fletcher wrote
Cupid's Revenge at a time when theatre was beginning to more closely resemble theatre as we know it than it was theatre as Shakespeare knew it, and Beaumont and Fletcher were key innovators in making that leap.
Cupid's Revenge comes right from that moment when Shakespeare was starting to hang up his pen, and English theatre was making an evolutionary leap."
About Bad Quarto Productions: Bad Quarto Productions was founded in 2010 to explore the rarely performed plays of Shakespeare's time, and the ways in which Shakespeare's staging techniques can inform modern theatrical productions. The company has produced the earliest printed version of
Romeo and Juliet and
The Taming of a Shrew ("a shrew" not "the shrew"); the first performance of
The Merry Devil of Edmonton in the modern era; and
The Ballad of Dido, an original musical developed using Shakespearean techniques. Bad Quarto's performance style has found favor with audiences wherever we've played, and we continue to look for new ways of bridging the gap between Shakespeare's theatre and our own.
