Beautiful Soup Theater's has announced that their revival of Ferenc Molnar's Liliom will open at The Celebration of Whimsy [formerly The Living Theatre] in New York City on February 26th, 2014. Performances will play Wednesday through Saturday at 7:00pm, with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm. The run will conclude on March 9th.
Ferenc Molnar's Liliom, the classic play that inspired Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein's musical Carousel, has not seen a full production in New York City in over five decades. The production, directed by Artistic Director Steven Carl McCasland, will star the previously announced Gerrard Lobo as the beautiful but brutish Liliom and Morgan DeTogne as the only woman he has ever loved, Julie.
Additional casting for the production has been announced, featuring Sara Hymes as Marie (the role that inspired Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel), Rory Allan Meditz as Wolf (the role that inspired Enoch Snow in Carousel), Kimberly Rogers as Mrs. Muskat, Kelly Reader as Louise and Orlando Iriarte as The Heavenly Magistrate. Complete casting will be announced at a later time.
Molnar's play first opened on Broadway in 1921 and starred Eva Le Gallienne. It was revived eleven years later, but has not seen a full production in New York City. Since 1932, the work was adapted into the beloved musical Carousel by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and a ballet by Michel Legrand.
Beautiful Soup Theater is currently raising additional funds to produce the large-scale revival, which will be set in the original period. To donate, or see their teaser trailer, visit their IndieGogo campaign at: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-us-revive-liliom/x/217545.
A portion of proceeds raised from this production will benefit Safe Horizon, the largest victims' services agency in the United States, touching the lives of more than 250,000 children, adults, and families affected by abuse throughout New York City each year. For more information on Beautiful Soup's 2013-2014 season, visit them at www.beautifulsouptheatercollective.org.Videos
