The Department of Theatre at Barnard College has initiated a collaboration with the award-winning nonprofit company New Georges to launch "New Plays at Barnard," a program to showcase works by emerging playwrights. The inaugural production brings Lauren Feldman's The Egg-Layers to the stage. The show runs March 1-3 in the Glicker-Milstein Theatre of The Diana Center on Barnard's Morningside Heights campus. "Being in New York means our students have a unique opportunity to participate in all aspects of the theatrical process and the collaboration here is a perfect example." said W.B. Worthen, Alice Brady Pels Professor in the Arts and Chair of Barnard's Department of Theatre. "'New Plays at Barnard' represents a key departmental initiative with regard to theatre as a mode of inquiry and speaks directly to the College's mission of producing new forms of thinking and creation."

The Egg-Layers riffs on the Greek myth of Leda and the swan, and brings this disturbing story powerfully into the present: a performance of healing, revenge, and a search for the divine. The play is directed by Barnard Assistant Professor of Professional Practice Alice Reagan. "We're proud to present Lauren Feldman's provocative work as the first installment of 'New Plays at Barnard,'" Reagan said.

"We're excited and honored that New Georges is the first participant in 'New Plays at Barnard,'" said New Georges Artistic Director Susan Bernfield. "It's been a great pleasure to introduce the work we do downtown to Barnard's diverse and impressive body of students, and we're thrilled that the partnership brings with it the opportunity to support our company's artists and see a new play all the way through to production. We always want to see more of that!"

The Glicker-Milstein Black Box Theatre, which is named for Cheryl Glicker Milstein '82 and Philip Milstein, is a state-of-the-art performance space used by professionals in addition to students and faculty in Barnard's acclaimed theatre program.

About Barnard College
The idea was bold for its time. Founded in 1889, Barnard was the only college in New York City, and one of the few in the nation, where women could receive the same rigorous and challenging education available to men. Today, Barnard is the most sought-after college for women and remains dedicated to the education of strong, independent-minded women who change the world and the way we think about it.
