The fine art of story-telling is alive and well with Broken Box Mime Theater (BKBX), a group of talented young performers infusing contemporary themes with classic mime techniques to create live stage works that open the mind, touch the soul, and awaken the imagination.
BKBX's 2013-2014 season begins at Dixon Place, an Obie Award-winning, off-off-Broadway theater, and promises to be significant in both art and scope.
At First Sight (and Other Stories) is a 90-minute compilation of some of their most celebrated works mixed with vignettes created especially for this production - written, directed, and featuring the company of BKBX- each piece designed to take the audience on a journey from epic fantasy adventure to the intimate and very real moments of everyday life. Weaving comedy and drama through the show's fabric, At First Sight (and Other Stories) will entertain as well as enlighten. The show runs Thursdays - Saturdays: November 7 - 9, 14 - 16, and 21 - 23 @ 7:30 p.m. Matinees: November 9, 16, and 23 @ 2:00 p.m.
The evening includes three of their classic works: Some Day (originally presented at the Abington's June Havoc Theater) tells the story of an old man transported by the memories housed in his favorite record, Reservoir (a Fringe Festival premiere) personifies inner struggle and the battle one faces to conquer it, and the comedic Fifth Wheel (also an Abington premiere) finds two happy couples on a double date - plus an unexpected solo friend! The new pieces created for At First Sight (and Other Stories) will be announced shortly. Becky Baumwoll, the company's Artistic Director, sees ground-breaking things ahead for her talented company on this new endeavor.
At just over two years old, Broken Box has gathered significant credentials: acclaimed showings at Walkerspace, the Fringe Festival, The Kraine, and the June Havoc Theater at Abingdon, as well as appearances at The PIT, TADA! Theater, and aMios' SHOTZ! Festival. BKBX also operates a widely popular series of workshops for both students and professionals in the art of Silent Storytelling, presented a three-day Mime Festival last June, and isa Volunteer Artist with the 52nd Street Project Teen Ensemble, leading a 4-week movement unit this October.
The Company features actors, singers, dancers, writers, and teachers -- acclaimed in their own right -- joined together by their passion for storytelling. Members include Joel Perez, currently appearing in Fun Home at The Public Theater; Dinah Berkeley, who appeared in Adam Rapp's production of Stop the Virgens; Meera Kumbhani, who has performed at venues including Classic Stage Company and the Pearl Theatre, Marissa Molnar, currently in the 2013 National Tour of The Screwtape Letters, and Leah Wagner Leonard, whose credits include the feature film Holiday Baggage (with Cheryl Ladd & Barry Bostwick). Baumwoll herself is a veteran of The Pearl Theatre, The Actor's Company Theatre, and the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Jamie Roderick, the company's Lighting Designer, was the Assistant to the Lighting Designer for Broadway's Motown: The Musical, Elf, and Bring It On: The Musical. Of recent note: the company's inaugural producer, Brian Smith, went on to win a Tony for producing Broadway's Kinky Boots.
