Long-time collaborators Felicia Lobo (Insomnium Theatre Company) and Zach Donovan (Subtle Pride) have teamed up to present the world premiere of Donovan's latest play, BIRTHDAY PLAY.
BIRTHDAY PLAY will be presented in a limited engagement run at The Alchemical Theatre Lab (104 W. 14th St., NYC) from tonight, August 5th, through August 7th. Tickets ($10) are currently available for purchase online at birthdayplay.bpt.me.
BIRTHDAY PLAY is created by writer Zach Donovan and director Felicia Lobo, with set and props by Jenna Antoniades, costumes by Noelia Mann, movement direction by Abby Awe, and lighting by AnDrew Carr.
BIRTHDAY PLAY is produced by Joe Gery and Lauren Harris, stage managed by Grace Hannoy, and featuring performers Abby Awe, Zoe Curzi, Zach Donovan, Kelley Dugan, Megan Ermilio, Gabbie Fried, Sam Gonzalez, Dante Jeanfelix, Katie Looney, Sky Smith, and Mina Walker.
BIRTHDAY PLAY follows an unnamed protagonist through a dream-like metropolis on his 22nd birthday. For everyone he meets, his birthday is important, a reason to celebrate, but he himself takes issue with the seemingly arbitrary ritual of the birthday celebration. He's not sure what his issue is exactly, just that it feels unnecessary. His closest friend grapples with how to celebrate someone whose only wish is not to be celebrated. The strangers he encounters suddenly feel familiar. The city that felt so familiar this morning now seems out of place and illogical. As his seemingly stereotypical city begins to reveal its emotionally uncanny underbelly, the unnamed protagonist wonders whether it is possible to grow up without growing old.
