This winter, Andrea J. Fulton's new stage play UGLY IS A HARD PILL will premiere at Theater for the New City (Executive Producer Crystal Field, TNC Artistic Director) from today, December 19 through January 12, 2014. Directed by Broadway veteran performer Leslie Dockery (Sophisticated Ladies, The Tap Dance Kid and Eubie!), this dark comedy featuring music and movement is set against the backdrop of heterosexual, bisexual and homosexual relationships in modern urban culture.
Offering a hilarious and sometimes emotional glimpse into the lives of those looking for love in all the wrong places, UGLY IS A HARD PILL centers on African American couple Keef & Lena...both are "on the down low" and their love lives are scandalous! But as this couple's false realities are shattered, sexual orientation proves to be the least of their concerns in this ballsy and moving comedy that reminds us of our ability to impact our own lives in positive and sometimes very ugly ways.
The cast will feature Kymbali Craig, Jeffrey B. Holliman, Donnell E. Smith, Gareth E. Lawson, Allen C. Harris, Illona S. Dixon, Lori Laing, Ken Bolander, Denise Fair Grant, Mark Lang, J'rome Andre, Virgous Lunceford, Leicester Landon and M. James Ealy.
The creative team includes Co-Director Gabrielle C. Archer, lighting design by Alex Bartenieff, scenic design by Mark Marcante, sound design and technical operation by Steven McMullen, costume design by Anita Ellis and stage manager Joyce Pena.
UGLY IS A HARD PILL will run from 12/19/13-1/12/14 at Theater for the New City (155 First Avenue) in the East Village, NYC with performances Thursday-Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are $18 ($15 for students/seniors) and can be purchased online at www.SmartTix.com & by phone at 212-868-4444.
