Through the use of poetry, dance, song, imagery, and ritual, Nia Calloway re-examines what it means to call this body a place of home.
All For One Theater (Michael Wolk, Founder & Artistic Director and Nicholas A. Cotz, Executive & Producing Director) has announced the All For One Theater Solo Collective (AFO SoCo) presentation of HOMEBODY: A Ritual Party, written and performed by Nia Calloway and directed by Paula Ali. HOMEBODY: A Ritual Party will play February 17-25, 2023 at HERE (145 Sixth Avenue, New York, NY 10013) as part of HERE's SubletSeries: Co-Op.
Through the use of poetry, dance, song, imagery, and ritual, Nia Calloway re-examines what it means to call this body a place of home while observing the obscurity of what home has meant for her as a Black person.Nia Calloway (Playwright/Performer): is a multi-disciplinary artist and astrologer who traverses the worlds of theatre, poetry, music, dance, and the healing arts. Through the combination of written word, sound experimentation, and explorative movement, she aims to create spaces of healing and introspection for her audience. Driven by the desire to relate the natural world, supernatural phenomena, the cosmos, and time to our bodies, Nia's art serves to heal and reorient our collective stories around female bodies, QBIPOC bodies, and especially Black femme bodies. She is thrilled and honored to be a member of AFO Theater's Solo Collective Cohort 2022.
Paula Ali (Director): is a half Persian Performer/Director/Choreographer from Nashville. As a multi-faceted artist she gravitates towards work that forwards the progressive narrative for Femme identifying POC. Her latest credits include (Burgess) Randy's Dandy Coaster Castle at IRT, Q2 at the NewHarmonyProject (Yasmin), her self produced Dance Short titled Shy, and directing the play The Bad In Each Other by Alexander Perez at NewWorkFestival. You may also have seen her following Zhailon around as his assistant in Chicken and Biscuits on Broadway and Patience at Second Stage UPTOWN. Thank you to Nia for including her on this incredible journey.
The creative team includes lighting design by Dariel Garcia and dramaturgy by Charlene Jean. Alden Kennedy serves as production stage manager.
HOMEBODY: A Ritual Party will play February 17-25, 2023 with performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:00 pm; with a matinee on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
Tickets are $20 and available for purchase online at www.here.org.
All For One Theater is dedicated to producing and developing extraordinary solo theater, and to creating opportunities for solo artists to enjoy sustaining careers. Extraordinary solo theater is unique in its ability to deliver life-changing stories. It speaks with a passion and intimacy that compels us to lean in, learn, relate, and revel, while offering a range of topics and experiences as diverse as humankind itself. Since 2011, All For One Theater has presented acclaimed full-length solo plays Off-Broadway. We also created the AFO Solo Collective (AFO|SoCo) to nurture and develop some of the brightest writing, performing, and directing talent in the solo world.
HOMEBODY: A Ritual Party has been developed through the AFO Solo Collective (AFO SoCo), and previously held a one-night presentation at Judson Memorial Church for Judson Arts Wednesdays. HERE Co-Ops are special HERE presentations as part of HERE's curated SubletSeries@HERE rental program, which provides artists with subsidized space and equipment and a technical liaison. This program aims to support the artistic process by providing artists with much-needed resources to put practice into action.
