OTHER WORLDS is a theatrical diptych inspired by New York award-winning author and playwright Sarah Schulman's non-fiction book, Ties That Bind: Familial Homophobia and Its Consequences. Ryan Tracy takes Schulman's didactic, unapologetic work and extrapolates two theatrical tableaux that are as politically direct as they are entertainingly absurd.
In Part 1, "Fraternity," a made-up family of college fraternity brothers wrestles with consequences when one of them has a revelation while reading Sarah Schulman's book. Defiantly, one of the other brothers, Chet, a major (if self-aware and kind of gay-acting) homophobe, takes the fraternity on a tour de force of homophobic power. After all is said and done, everything is revealed, yet nothing changes. In Part 2, "Homecoming Queen," a family awaits the return of a sort of prodigal-son-in-drag, Jerry. While Jerry basks in the position of authority he has been granted within his family, his two sisters struggle to figiure out where they fit in as individuals caught up in Jerry's fabulous if privileged wake.
The reading will include an eclectic cast of downtown theater notables, actors of professional stage and screen, and up-and-coming performers.
Performance and dance artist Jack Ferver (NOTES!!!, A Movie Star Needs a Movie; TV's Strangers With Candy) will star in the two leading roles, Chet and Jerry.
The cast also includes, CHRISTIAN COULSON (The Hours, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Clancy O'Connor (John Adams), Jenn Harris, ALYSSA SIMON, LYNN BERG, NEIL PRITCHARD, and introducing ANGEL Z. JONES.
The reading of OTHER WORLDS will be directed by Ryan Tracy.
