AMiOS has announced the next show in its 2020 season! They will be celebrating a decade of 100 productions and over 600 plays with Shotz Trek on March 9th.
AMiOS (an acronym for Art and Music in Our Souls) is an artist-run, process-driven, participatory arts collective with a theatrical focus, whose mission is to build community around the continual generation of art that reflects and responds to our ever-changing world.
SHOTZ! is a theatrical pressure cooker that every month pairs 6 groups of actors, writers, and directors together to create brand new 7-minute plays for performance the first Monday of the month at The Kraine Theater, 85 E. 4th St, and is the best, most consistent showcase of up-and-coming talent in NYC.
Since its first episode aired in 1966, Star Trek has provided a hopeful and optimistic vision of the future for its viewers. Gene Roddenberry's idealistic rendering of space exploration has provided a contrasting point of view to more dystopic and cynical science fiction. Through its portrayal of a future where humanity has made great progress with long-standing (and contemporarily relevant) problems such as war, racism, sexism, and climate change, Star Trek showed us how humanity, at its best, could be. In choosing Star Trek as this month's Shotz theme, we sought to subvert the current cultural climate of fatalist despair, and engender in the crew and our audience a spirit of hope for what's next.
Shotz Trek will feature a new short play by Lizzie Vieh (Monsoon Season, Rattlestick & 2019 Edinburgh Fringe, originally commissioned as a SHOTZ! piece), Mat Smart (The Agitators), and an acting ensemble that includes Maurice Jones (Broadway: Romeo & Juliet, The Lifespan of a Fact ).
