Zagreb Youth Theater, from Zagreb, Croatia, will present "The Garage" at La MaMa E.T.C. from January 28th to February 7th.
"The Garage" is based on a popular contemporary Croatian novel of the same name by Zdenko Mesaric, which has been described as "moving, dark, cold, Sisyphean." Modern Croatia is portrayed through the metaphor of a child boxer. Director Ivica Buljan explores the spaces of violence and despair; the world of transition that has lost sense of moral and social values and has resorted to wild capital and sadistic exploitation. A boxing ring will be built in the center of La MaMa's Annex Theater for the production, which wlll be performed in English by Zagreb Youth Theatre. There will be live music by Croatia's most popular hip-hop band and lots of physical theater (which we have learned to anticipate as excellent when it comes from Eastern Europe).
Zagreb Youth Theatre, placed at Teslina 7, in the very center of the city of Zagreb, is a part of multimedia youth center, together with Radio 101, Youth television, and several popular places for the Zagreb youth gatherings. As one of the oldest theatres of this kind, it is considered to be the cradle of the Croatian theatre, since many generations of actors and people in culture began in the Youth Studio, today known as ZYT College.
