Award-winning actor William Lyon stars in A NIGHT IN NOVEMBER a play by Marie Jones, author of the Broadway comedy "Stones in His Pockets"
Acclaimed Irish theater troupe, the Shoestring Theatre Company of Cork, Ireland, brings its award-winning production of A NIGHT IN NOVEMBER by Marie Jones, author of the Broadway comedy STONES IN HIS POCKETS, to New York for a strictly limited run October 28-30 at the W. Scott McLucas Studio Theatre at Irish Repertory Theatre (132 West 22nd Street). Kevin O'Shea directs.
A NIGHT IN NOVEMBER stars award-winning actor William Lyons as Kenneth McAlister, a working-class Protestant, during a fateful night in November, 1993 in Belfast when the Republic of Ireland soccer team plays against Northern Ireland in a World Cup qualifier. As the game progresses, Kenneth finds himself watching the crowd more than the football -- and exposing his Anti-Catholic bigotry.
The production features scenic design by Donie Curtin and John Noonan; costume and sound design by Aoife O'Shea; and lighting design by Michael Hennessy.
A NIGHT IN NOVEMBER elevated Shoestring Theatre Company to a new level and marked Mr. Lyons as a rising talent throughout Ireland. According to the Irish Examiner, "Shoestring took a big risk entering a one-man play on the circuit and only a group with an actor of the calibre of William Lyons could pull off the gamble."
The gamble paid off. William Lyons won the Best Actor Award for his performance in A NIGHT IN NOVEMBER at this year's All-Ireland Drama Festival in Athlone. Prior to taking home this top acting prize, he won seven best actor awards on the festival circuit for his work in the play. A native of Cork, Ireland, his credits also include THE KINGS OF KILBURN HIGH ROAD, THE SALVAGE SHOP, PHILADELPHIA HERE I COME, and THE YEAR OF THE HIKER. He can also be seen the short film "The Queenstown Story."
Director Kevin O'Shea helmed Bill C. Davis' MASS APPEAL which qualified at the All-Ireland Confined Drama Festival in 1986. Other credits include THE KINGS OF KILBURN HIGH ROAD, THE SALVAGE SHOP, PHILADELPHIA HERE I COME, SHARON'S GRAVE and EDUCATING RITA. He is the Artistic Director of Shoestring Theatre Company.
Playwright Marie Jones is best known for her comedy STONES IN HIS POCKET which played Broadway in 2001. The Belfast-born author is also the author of several stage and television plays including UNDER NAPOLEON'S NOSE, TRIBES, THE HAMSTER WHEEL, FIGHTING THE SHADOWS, WINGNUT AND THE SPROG and WOMEN ON THE VERGER OF HRT. Most recently, she wrote the book for the new musical THE CHOSEN ROOM.
