The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director) and 1113 Productions (Steven Ullman, Executive Producer) announced today that Stephanie Umoh, most recently seen as "Sarah" in the Broadway revival of Ragtime, will join the cast of Falling For Eve in its final week. Ms. Umoh will play the role of "Eve" starting performances on Tuesday, August 3rd until the show's scheduled closing on Sunday, August 8th. Krystal Joy Brown, who is currently playing "Eve," will be leaving the production to work on an upcoming project.
James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director of the York, said "One of the York's missions is to encourage and support young, new talent in the musical
Theatre World. While we are thrilled for Krystal as she moves on to the next big project in her career, we also relish the ability to bring aboard another bright star,
Stephanie Umoh, to this exciting production."
"I knew when
Krystal Joy Brown auditioned for us that we had found a star. Now someone else has figured it out also. We have loved working with her and wish her all the best in the next and very important step in her career. Also, we are thrilled to welcome Broadway star
Stephanie Umoh to our cast," said co-producer
Steven Ullman of 1113 Productions.
Falling for Eve, a new musical with book by two-time Tony Award-winner
Joe DiPietro (Memphis), music by
Bret Simmons ("The
Megan Mullally Show") and lyrics by
David Howard (Galaxy Quest), began performances July 6th, and officially opened July 15th at The York Theatre at Saint Peter's. The Associated Press called it ‘dazzling' and ‘a delightfully irreverent musical comedy!'"
The current cast of Falling for Eve features
Jennifer Blood (Susan and God),
Krystal Joy Brown (Hair),
Nehal Joshi (Les Miserables),
Adam Kantor (Next to Normal, Rent),
Jose Llana (Spelling Bee, Flower Drum Song) and
Sasha Sloan (Ragtime).
Based on
David Howard's play Adam Alone, Falling for Eve offers a second look at the world's first love story. Creation is going perfectly. Eve, curious about what lies beyond the Garden of Eden, and obsessed with the notion that something is forbidden, bites the infamous apple. Then Adam doesn't. How exactly they'll get together to create the human race is anybody's guess. Falling for Eve is a fresh and unconventional retelling of the most famous romance of all time, filled with unexpected twists and turns as Eve and Adam realize that "paradise" may not be a place after all.
The production is directed by
Larry Raben, with music direction by Kim Steiner, musical staging by
Lee Martino, scenic design by
Beowulf Boritt, costumes by
Bobby Pearce and lighting by
Herrick Goldman.
The
York Theatre Company is the only theater in New York City - and one of very few in the world - dedicated to developing and fully producing new musicals and preserving neglected, notable shows from the past. This season, York was nominated for seven Drama Desk, two
Lucille Lortel, two Outer Critics Circle and one Drama League Award for its production of Yank! A WWII Love Story (which has been announced for a Broadway transfer, along with last season's Enter Laughing, The Musical). For almost four decades, York's intimate, imaginative style of producing both original and neglected classic musicals has resulted in critical acclaim and recognition from artists and audiences alike. Under the guidance of Artistic Director
James Morgan since 1997, the York has focused exclusively on new musicals in its Mainstage Series-most of them world, American, or New York premieres-by some of the field's most esteemed creators, and has also helped launch the careers of many talented new writers. Over 30 cast recordings from
York Theatre Company productions are now available on CD, and commercial transfers of such York productions as The Musical of Musicals - The Musical!, Souvenir, Jolson & Company, and acclaimed revivals of Sweeney Todd and Pacific Overtures have all showcased the importance of the York and its programs.
