The Public Theater also Tweeted this evening that "due to poor air quality in neighborhood" all performances at the Public and Joe's Pub -- including HAMILTON and JOSEPHINE AND I -- have been cancelled.
The New York Times writes that "a powerful explosion" caused one building to collapse and started "a large fire that engulfed a neighboring building" earlier this afternoon. At least 12 people were injured; three are in critical condition.
The buildings are located at 121 and 123 Second Avenue near East Seventh Street, where Con Edison had been doing some kind of construction work.
New York Fire Department chief spokesman Francis X. Gribbon told the Times the explosion was likely caused by gas, but the official cause has not been confirmed.
Authorities have closed down the surrounding streets and have also shut off gas in the area for safety.
