The York Theatre Company Presents a Return Off-Broadway Engagement of ENTER LAUGHING

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, will present a return engagement of the hit Off-Broadway musical, Enter Laughing: The Musical with book by Joseph Stein, music and lyrics by Stan Daniels, based on the play Enter Laughing by Joseph Stein from the novel by Carl Reiner, produced in association with Riki Kane Larimer and Alene Daniels. Enter Laughing: The Musical returns to kick off The York's year-long 50th Anniversary Celebration at The York Theatre Company at Saint Peter's (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue).

York Theatre favorite Stuart Ross (Plaid Tidings) is once again set to direct. Performances are set to begin Tuesday, May 7, 2019 for a limited return engagement through Sunday, June 9, 2019. Opening Night will be Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 6:45 p.m. Cast and creative team will be announced at a later date.

Enter Laughing: The Musical, York's blockbuster mega-hit, is back... and what better way to kick off York's 50th anniversary season? This is musical comedy at its best - a heartfelt, side-splitting laugh-fest. The New York Post called York's original production "the funniest show in town since The Producers.

Based on Carl Reiner's autobiographical novel and Joseph Stein's stage adaptation, this hilariously tuneful musical careens through the misadventures of star-struck, stage-struck, woman-struck teenager David Kolowitz, who pratfalls his way into manhood via the theatre.

CURRENTLY ON STAGE AT THE YORK: Celebrating the centennial of Alan Jay Lerner! The York Theatre Company enters the new year with the 25th Anniversary of its acclaimed Musicals in Mufti series celebrating the work of the legendary librettist and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, whose hundredth birthday was August 31, 2018. The series honors one of the creators behind such classics as Brigadoon, Camelot, Love Life, and My Fair Lady.

Opening the 2019 winter series is Carmelina, with music by Burton Lane, lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, additional lyrics by Barry Harman, and book by Joseph Stein and Alan Jay Lerner. Now in performance through February 3, 2019.

Directed by Michael Leeds (Bette and Barry: From Bathhouse to Broadway), and with music direction by David Hancock Turner (Desperate Measures), the eight-member cast features Andréa Burns (In the Heights) in the eponymous title role, with Antonio Cipriano (Jagged Little Pill) as Roberto/Guitarist, MaryJoanna Grisso (West Side Story) as Gia Campbell/Hostess, Evan Harrington (Chicago) as Walter Braddock/Waiter, Anne L. Nathan (Once) as Rosa/Cook, Timothy John Smith (Candide) as Steve Karzinski/Waiter, Joey Sorge (A Bronx Tale) as Vittorio Dela Marta/Eduardo, and Jim Stanek (Fun Home; 7 York Mufti's) as Carlton Smith/Waiter.

The production team includes Lighting Designer Stephen O'Shea, Production Manager Kevin Maloof, Production Stage Manager Shanna Allison and Assistant Stage Manager Julianne Menassian. Casting for Carmelina is by Geoff Josselson, CSA.

After previous sold-out Mufti runs in 1996 and 2006, the delightful Carmelina makes its return to The York. In a picturesque Italian village, Carmelina has raised her teenaged daughter to believe her father was an American who died heroically in World War II-all the while collecting child support checks from three American soldiers, each of whom thinks he is the girl's father. Complications arise when all three soldiers show up at the same time for a reunion. Even though the original Broadway production only ran for 17 performances, the lush Lerner and Lane score received a 1979 Tony Award nomination for Best Score. The version of Carmelina presented here is the revised version created by Joseph Stein, Burton Lane, and Lerner protégé Barry Harman for The York in 1996, then further revised for a second Mufti presentation ten years later.

The York Theatre Company's acclaimed Musicals in Mufti series of musical theatre gems, performed in a simply-staged, book-in-hand concert format, are part of the Muftis' twenty-fifth historic year of presenting shows from the past that deserve a second look. Mufti means "in street clothes, without the trappings of a full production."

The remaining performance schedule for Carmelina is Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., Friday at 8:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

For the second show in the series, The York revisits one of Lerner and Loewe's lesser-known gems with the short-lived 1945 The Day Before Spring, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. A married woman attends a college reunion where she encounters the man with whom she almost eloped ten years before. Romantically stirred by a novel he has written about her, she considers leaving her husband and reuniting with her former flame. With a score that was never recorded, moments of The Day Before Spring served as inspiration for such Lerner and Loewe classics as Gigi and My Fair Lady. Although the show was previously seen in a Mufti staging in 2007, this presentation will feature the full original score, recently being discovered for a 2010 UK production-its first hearing in New York since 1945. Marc Acito directs, with music direction by David Hancock Turner. Performances begin Saturday afternoon, February 9, 2019 and continue for 11 performances only through February 17, 2019. Opening Night will be Sunday evening, February 10, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

Closing out the popular Mufti series celebration is Lolita, My Love, with music by John Barry and book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, based on the 1955 novel Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. The musical, which originally closed in Boston in 1971, closely follows the legendary novel: a college professor named Humbert Humbert becomes fascinated by and starts to seduce his landlady's young daughter, Dolores "Lolita" Haze. The fascination quickly turns into obsession, and soon a whirlwind race across the US begins. "For this Mufti presentation, Erik Haagensen (Darling of the Day and The Day Before Spring in Mufti) has created a new script, edited together from Lerner's assorted drafts, each vastly different from the others. Haagensen has stated that "now audiences will have a chance to hear Lolita on stage and decide for themselves what they think of this unquestionably daring musical that begins as a black comedy and ends in tragedy." Nabokov himself had said "Mr. Lerner is most talented and an excellent classicist. If you have to make a musical of 'Lolita,' he is the man to do it". Lolita, My Love will be directed by Emily Maltby, with music direction by Deniz Cordell. Performances are set to begin Saturday afternoon, February 23, 2019 and continue for 11 performances only through March 3, 2019. Opening Night will be Sunday evening, February 24, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

SPECIAL MUFTI SERIES EVENTS: Special events surrounding the Lerner celebration will include Almost Like Being in Love: An Evening of Lerner & Loewe...and Friends on February 25, 2019, at 7:00 p.m., and two multimedia events presented by theater historian Charles Troy: The Creation of My Fair Lady set for Monday, February 4, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. and The Creation of Camelot on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.
