The United Solo Theatre Festival proudly announces the English language premiere of THE FAREWELL in a one night only performance at Theatre Row on October 3 at 7:30 p.m.
THE FAREWELL, originally written in Greek, is considered a classic poetic masterpiece and was written by Yiannis Ritsos, one of the greatest Greek poets of the 20th Century. Under the direction of Ioanna Katsarou, actor and composer Phyto Stratis brings to life the last hours of Gregory Afxentiou, a soldier who was burned alive in the anti-colonial struggle of the Cypriot people.
As creative collaborators for the past 8 years, Katsarou and Stratis have brought 6 plays to the stage, including "The Farewell" in the original Greek language, a production that was revered by critics, including The National Herald, which noted, "The poignancy of Stratis' portrayal brought the audience to tears".
Not only does Stratis act in this piece, but he also composed the music. Stratis, an MFA graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Musical Theatre Writing program, explains, "I felt compelled to compose original music because it was another way to connect with the character on a deeper level. The heightened language of the piece called out for it".
The United Solo Theatre Festival is the world's largest solo theatre festival. Stratis expounds, "I wanted to translate this piece from Greek to English and bring it to an Off-Broadway stage as a tribute to the heroes in our world. It's a very rare act to sacrifice the greatest gift, our own lives, for others."
