The Enchanted Pig, a co-production from London's The Opera Group, ROH2 at the Royal Opera House and the Young Vic, takes the best bits from beloved fairytales and mixes them into a witty, gritty modern mix of music, theater and fantasy. Composed and written by the superstar team Jonathan Dove and Alasdair Middleton (Adventures of Pinocchio, Swanhunter), and directed by The Opera Group's award-winning John Fulljames, The Enchanted Pig will make its U.S. premiere at The New Victory Theater from February 5 through February 21, 2010.
In this off-beat and funny fairytale of musical entertainment, beauty meets the beast once again when Princess Flora, the youngest of three gangly, gum-chewing sisters, learns her betrothed is a boar. Swept off to the north, she discovers (of course!) that her hoggy hubby is hexed and only she can break the spell. Follow Flora from palace to pigsty in this twisty tale of mud and marriage. Sometimes, a girl's just gotta go out and rescue the prince for herself!Mr. Dove, Mr. Middleton and Mr. Fulljames are three esteemed U.K. artists who have successfully introduced opera to young audiences - a challenging proposition. In a December 11 London Times article describing Mr. Dove as "the wizard of contemporary children's opera," he said, "Children need to feel an entitlement in the opera house, and if that means creating rep that is more welcoming, that can only be a good thing."Videos
