MayBelle Smith was a celebrated 50's era blues singer best known for her hit "Candy." A big woman with a big talent and a large appetite for life, Maybelle was born to sing. But she knew the highs and the lows of success and heartache, as she struggled her whole life with her weight, drugs, and her relationships with men.

Starring the incomparable Lillias White, winner of the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, People's Choice Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Obie Award and Drama League Award, most recently Tony-nominated for her role in Fela.

The Amas Six O'Clock Musical Theatre Lab is a development series for writers, lyricists and composers to mount staged readings of their new musicals.
BIG MAYBELLE: SOUL OF THE BLUES is supported, inpart, by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, celebrating 50 years building strong creative communities in NY State's 62 counties, and by the ASCAP Foundation, Irving Caesar Fund, the BMI Foundation, the Barbara Bell Cummings Foundation, the Dramatists Guild, the Edith Meiser Fund and through the generous support of many individuals.
