For its 2010 season, Teatro Círculo has invited Puerto Rican actress Johanna Rosaly to join the cast of Argentinean playwright Alberto Adellach's SABINA Y LUCRECIA, directed by Dean Zayas. The show premieres on September in New York City and on October in Puerto Rico. Sabina y Lucrecia will run at Teatro Círculo (64 East 4th Street, between 2nd Avenue and Bowery) from September 23rd to October 10th, with a premiere gala event on Friday, September 24th, 7 pm, at Baruch Performing Arts Center (25th Street, between Lexington & Third Avenue).

This production marks the New York theatrical debut of Johanna Rosaly. Playing the leading role of Lucrecia, Rosaly will share the stage with award-winning actress Eva Cristina Vásquez. Sabina y Lucrecia is the story of two mental asylum escapees whose paths cross in an undetermined time and space; their coming together both strengthens and weakens them. In a claim for dignity, Adellach's characters escape to a world where it's unclear if what prevails is the reality of their insanity or the insanity of their reality.

Teatro Círculo's Artistic Director, José Cheo Oliveras, speaks to this play's inclusion in the 2010 season: "Our commitment to promote Latin American theater led us to select Argentinean playwright Alberto Adellach's Sabina y Lucrecia. We feel it's important to contextualize the work that's being made throughout the Americas, to create links between Puerto Rican theater (which we frequently stage) and dramaturgies from other Latin American countries. It's our opinion that this is among the best Latin American theater pieces of the last few decades. We also feel that it will speak, in one way or another, to the experiences of many in our audience."

Rosaly, who hails from a successful career in Puerto Rican television and theater which propelled her to fame across all of Latin America, with acclaimed leading roles in telenovelas like Cristina Bazán and El Hijo de Ángela María, says of her debut in New York City: "The significance of this experience is twofold, one professional and the other personal. Professionaly, it's something of a milestone to be making my New York City theatrical debut; this is the theater mecca of the world. After many years of being at your profession, novelties like this are much appreciated, because you've accomplished so much already, you could say a bit of everything. Personally, I hope to take full advantage of the play's theme to heighten awareness about the ignorance and discrimination that exists in society when it comes to mental illnesses, especially when it has to do with women and mental illness."

Teatro Círculo is a theater company founded by a group of Latino artists with a strong academic background and with a committment to preserve and promote Latino cultural heritage through the staging of theatrical, educational and inclusive work. Its mission is to stage the best work by classic and contemporary playwrights in Spanish and Latin American theater. Teatro Círculo's broader objective is to promote appreciation for the richness of Latin American and Iberian cultures in the pluralistic context that characterizes New York City.

Teatro Círculo's 2010 Fall Season has the support of New York Regional Office for the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration. Luis M. Balzac, NY's Director of PRFAA, added: "For over 70 years the government of Puerto Rico Regional Office has been working to improve the quality of life for those who live in the Island; including the dissemination of our culture and ethnic background. Teatro Círculo is a perfect example of an organization that educates and promotes the beauty, success and Art of Puerto Rico."

Teatro Circulo 2010 Season is made possible with the support of NY State Council on the Arts, Department of Cultural Affairs, Con Edison and Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration.
