Scott Morfee, Jean Doumanian and Tom Wirtshafter, the producers of Tribes by Nina Raine, announced today the acclaimed Off-Broadway hit play has officially recouped its entire investment. Tribes began performances February 16, 2012 and opened to rave reviews on March 4, 2012 at The Barrow Street Theatre (27 Barrow Street) where it will give its final performance January 6, 2013.

“We are extremely pleased and honored to have brought this award-winning play to an Off-Broadway audience,” the producers stated. “"Upon closing Tribes will have given 19 preview and 345 regular performances, and grossed over $2.5 million. To date, it has been seen by more than 50,000 theatre patrons, including 4,000 who attended captioned and/or interpreted performances, under the auspices of TDF (Accessibility Program, TAP), and interpreted through arrangement with Hands On."

Directed by multiple Lortel and Obie Award-winner David Cromer (Our Town), the cast features Susannah Flood (A Civil War Christmas) as Sylvia, Russell Harvard (There Will Be Blood) as Billy, Lee Roy Rogers (Orson’s Shadow) as Beth, Jeff Still (August: Osage County) as Christopher, DIna Thomas (See How They Run) as Ruth and Nick Westrate, winner of a 2012 Special Drama Desk Award for his versatility in the 2011-2012 season (Unnatural Acts, Love’s Labor's Lost, and Galileo), as Daniel.

In Tribes, Billy was born deaf into a hearing family, and raised inside the fiercely idiosyncratic and unrepentantly politically incorrect cocoon of his parents’ house. He has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that he finally understands what it means to be understood.

The most nominated new play of the season, Tribes garnered 20 awards nominations and was declared “Best Play” by New York Drama Desk, “Best Foreign Play” by the New York Drama Critics Circle and “Best New Play” by the Off-Broadway Alliance. For his New York debut, Russell Harvard received the 2012 Theatre World Award.

The design team for Tribes includes Scenic Design by multiple Tony Award®-winner Scott Pask (The Book of Mormon), Costume Design by Tristan Raines (The Merchant of Venice), Lighting Design by Keith Parham (Adding Machine), Sound Design by Daniel Kluger (The Temperamentals), Projection Design by Jeff Sugg (Chinglish) and Casting by Pat McCorkle. The Production Stage Manager is Richard A. Hodge.

Tribes is produced Off-Broadway by Scott Morfee, Jean Doumanian, Tom Wirtshafter, Patrick Daly, 2Manocherians, Christian Chadd Taylor, Burnt Umber Productions, Roger E. Kass and Marc & Lisa Biales.
