The off-Broadway theater scene will be a bit richer with the advent of The Magdalene, a musical play about Mary Magdalene composed by James Olm with a book by Mr. Olm and J.C. Hanley. Tony Award winner Richard Maltby, Jr. is the Creative Consultant on the production which is directed by Richard Burk.
With previews that began on June 14th and an opening nighttonight, The Magdelene runs through September 4th at St. Clement's Theatre, 423 West 46th Street. Produced by Emerald Green Productions, AF Productions and general managed by
Peter Bloch, this musical play's scenic and lighting design is by Sean McIntosh with costumes by Darrell Wagner.
The Magdalene is a contemporary musical about Mary Magdalene. This ultra-progressive story is inspired by the recent discovery of alternative biblical gospels-The Gnostic Gospels. In these Gospels, we find Mary Magdalene-not the prostitute-but the most enlightened of all disciples and the Apostle of all Apostles.
In this musical, Mary and Yeshua are destined to become husband and wife, and face together the dangerous and corrupt powers of the time-the Roman Empire and the church-not only battling the new religious ideas, but also the resistance to empowering women.
Emerald Green and
Angelo Fraboni Productions decided that the perfect venue for The Magdelene was St. Clement's Theatre, "a church by day and theatre at night". Hearing the soaring melodies in this setting and experiencing its passionate tale of religion and sacrifice, the producers waited close to a year to be able to present the nearly three month run of The Magdalene in this space.
Linsie VanWinkle, a relative newcomer, a fresh face with a lovely voice, will play the title character.
