"The Land of the Purple People," a new play by 20 year old college student Paige Strothmann, which deals with the idea of a genderless society while tackling the issue of inequality, will have its first ever staged performance on November 24, presented by the Manhattan Theatre Source as part of their Playground Development Series. The production is directed by Lauren Heirigs. Performances will be at the Manhattan Theatre Source, 177 MacDougal Street, New York, N.Y., at 8PM on Wednesday 24th, Friday 26th and Saturday 27th and tickets are $15. For tickets please call 866-811-4111 or visit https://www.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/781495.

"The Land of the Purple People," was first performed as a reading at Wagner College in Staten Island through the student organization Completely Student Productions as part of their annual short play festival. Inspired by the National Equality March in October of 2009, Ms. Strothmann was led to write the piece first as an assignment for her playwriting class before moving forward with it to make it what it is today.

The cast includes Stephanie Gaertner, Elizabeth Renaldi, Kaite Belmont, Matthew Sydney, Maureen Yvette Germain, Ryan Rhue, Taylor Ferrera and Timothy Ferris. Lighting design is by Alison Hall, scenic design is by Anthony Freitas, hair and makeup design is by Louann Strothmann.

The Manhattan Theatre Source is a not-for-profit arts service organization with a groundbreaking purpose: to organize the disparate communities within New York's vital off-off Broadway movement, and to provide a "one-stop" shop resource center for independent theatre artists and audiences across the nation. At the heart of the source's mission is the Playground Development Series which generously lends theatre space to emerging and independent artists. Past Playground Development successes include "Sidd" which moved to New World Stages in 2006 and "[Title of Show]" which went on to win 3 Obie Awards and eventually transferred to Broadway.
