The Lighthouse Theatre Company presents "Dumb Show" by Joe Penhall, Off Broadway at Under St. Marks theatre at 94 St, Marks Place (bet 1st Ave & Avenue A). Previews begin on Wednesday, February 11th, 2009 and the opening is Friday, February 13th at 8:00 pm for the limited engagement of this New York Premiere. It is directed by Kailee McGee, and Rich Costalles, who also did the set design; with lighting design by Kirsten Glove and costume design by Brittany Holmes. The dark comedy stars Anthony Caronna as 'Greg', Alexander Smith as 'Barry', and Heather Daley as ‘Liz'.
Barry, a hapless TV comic, hopes to laugh all the way to the bank when he's courted by financial execs, John and Jane, promising fat fees and five star treatment that he deserves. Barry is instead urged by the bankers to give a candid account of his life and views. The Barry that emerges is the least of the surprises in the tense game power and manipulation that ensues.
"Dumb Show" tackles two big questions in today's society. How far will people go to destroy a celebrity? And what is Privacy when the whole world knows who you are? Joe Penhall tackles these questions head on in this explosive dark comedy.
Written in 2004,"Dumb Show" won audiences and critics over when it debuted at the Royal Court in London and the American premiere was at the South Coast Repertory. Never before produced in New York City, The Lighthouse Theatre Company is proud to be the first Company to Stage this production here in Manhattan. Award-winning Joe Penhall established his voice in contemporary drama with earlier work for the Royal Court, Donmar Warehouse and National Theatre. Joe Penhall has written such success's as "Blue/Orange", "Love and Understanding", "Some Voices" along with many others.
This is The Lighthouse Theatre Company's 4th production. The Company's mission is to put up plays that are brilliantly written, but are rarely seen. To show them in a way that is unlike any other, with talented actors and cutting edge direction; taking these shows out of the dark and presenting them to the world re-worked with a modern point of view. The goal of the company is: To reach out and show the world that good, well crafted, raw theatre is still around and better than ever. "It's been Quiet a journey putting these first four shows up, but we learn more and more as we go. Even as many theatre companies fall to the sidelines during these hard times, Lighthouse Stays strong and always will".
