Named one of Huffington Post's "Favorite Female Comedians" and NY Magazine's "Comedians Funny People Find Funny," comedian Desiree Burch presents her newest solo work, TAR BABY, co-written with Dan Kitrosser. Directed by Isaac Byrne, previews of this limited Off-Broadway engagement begin January 5 at DR2 Theater. Opening night is slated for January 8th.
TAR BABY is the story of America's infamous black & white love affair, from shotgun wedding to "post-racial" open relationship. Drawing on folktales, history and autobiography, Desiree Burch speaks to the growing majority of minority experiences in America. With a socially conscious comedic style reminiscent of Richard Pryor and Louis C.K., this liberal not-so-African-American offers up a hysterical carnival game of Race & Capitalism-where no one's a winner, but everyone's still playing!
Desiree Burch has performed five original solo performances at venues including PS 122, Joe's Pub, Ars Nova, 59E59, Dixon Place, Galapagos Art Space, Yale University, and at Fringe Festivals in New York, London, New Orleans, Hollywood, and Edinburgh. Her comedy has been seen at Caroline's, Gotham Comedy Club, Highlights (UK), on VH1, MTV, NBC, Comedy Central and the stage of Saturday Night Live. Her work has been called "hilarious" (NY Daily News), "vibrant" (Gothamist) and "surprisingly meaty" (Off-Off Online); she is a "a force of nature" (Scotsman) onstage. She is a member of the Drama Desk-nominated and NY Innovative Theater Award-winning ensemble, The New York Neo-Futurists.
Dan Kitrosser is a writer, performer and storyteller. His plays have been performed at P.S. 122, The Ohio Theatre, Bleecker Street Theatre, and Urban Stages, with work developed at Primary Stages, The Lark Play Development Center and Rabbit Hole Ensemble, and grants awarded by Brooklyn Arts Council in 2010 and 2011. He is an MFA Playwright at The New School in New York City.
Isaac Byrne has directed the NY Innovative Theater Award-winning To Nineveh, Green, Something True, I Used To Write On Walls, Fresh Kills (59E59), The New Normal and the cowboy is dying (Coyote Rep), True West (Curious Frog Company) and Desiree Burch's 52 Man Pickup. He is the former Artistic Director of the GLAAD-Award winning company Working Man's Clothes, and the current Artistic Director of Theatre 4the People and a teacher at New York Film Academy.
