Soho Rep has announced the new preview date of October 13 and the new opening date of October 17 for its 2007-08 season opener, Philoktetes by John Jesurun at Soho Rep (46 Walker Street) in Manhattan.

Written, directed and designed by John Jesurun, the celebrated, iconoclastic theatre artist whose previous works include Chang in a Void Moon, Deep Sleep and Everything That Rises Must ConvergePhiloktetes is Jesurun's retelling of the classic Greek myth.

Louis Cancelmi has joined the cast in the title role of Philoktetes, which also features Will Badgett as Odysseus and Jason Lew as Neoptolemus.

"One of the most innovative forces in contemporary theatre in the last 30 years, Jesurun's signature hybrid of vernacular and lyrical language, cinematic and stage acting, and lush projection blend in this Philoktetes of beauty and brutality. Ten years after abandoning Philoktetes on an island, his fellow soldiers return to retrieve him, now needing him to win the Trojan War: Jesurun creates a war-of-wills chamber piece about a formidable and broken man unwilling to fight in his comrades' war," explain press notes. Philoktetes has lighting design by Jeff Nash and costume design by Ruth Pongstaphone.

Philoktetes was originally commissioned by the Kaaitheater, Brussels for Wooster Group founding member Ron Vawter. The project has since enjoyed productions in Europe, Mexico, and recently in Japan, starring Noh theatre legend Hideo Kanze.

Scheduled October 13 through October 28, performances of Philoktetes run Tuesday - Sundays at 7:30PM (with an added performance on Monday, October 15 at 7:30PM and no performance on Thursday, October 19 at 7:30PM).
