Signature Theatre previously announced the launch of Signature Cinema, which showcases films written by playwrights and films that explore the “world of the play” currently in production, screened in the theatre designed by architect Frank Gehry.

The first installment in this series is the 2011 Twentieth Century Fox film Margaret, written and directed by Residency Five Playwright-in-Residence Kenneth Lonergan, tonight, July 10th at 7:00 p.m. in The Irene Diamond Stage at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street between 9th and 10th Avenues). By embracing both stage and screen, this new program hopes to foster a new generation of theatergoers who appreciate the arts of both playwriting and screenwriting. Tickets are $13 for the general public and $5 for Signature Theatre subscribers. Additional titles will be announced soon.

Margaret was written and directed by Academy Award nominee Kenneth Lonergan (You Can Count on Me). Margaret is the story of Lisa (Anna Paquin), a sophisticated Manhattan teenager on the cusp of adulthood whose world is shattered when she inadvertently causes the death of a woman hit by a bus and lies to protect the bus driver. Setting a course for redemption and justice, Lisa reaches out to Emily (Jeannie Berlin), the deceased’s caustic best friend, and finds herself plunged down the rabbit-hole of the New York City legal system. Meanwhile her world is spinning out of control at school, in love, and at home, where she comes into conflict with her single mother Joan (J. Smith-Cameron), an actress, who is on her own quest for love and self-fulfillment. Margaret is an honest and unflinching portrait of moral dilemmas, mourning, and loss of innocence on the streets of New York City. The film stars Anna Paquin, J. Smith-Cameron, Jean Reno, Jeannie Berlin, Allison Janney, Matthew Broderick, Mark Ruffalo, and Matt Damon.
