Shrunken Shakespeare Company's Co-Founder and newly appointed Executive Director Yvonne Cone announced today that the well-known company is back after two and a half years with a brand new Board of Directors, and an all-new production. SSC's first production in this new outing as a not-for-profit will be William Shakespeare's Richard II, which will be the highlight of their 2018/2019 season. Dates and location will be announced at a later time.
The new Board of Directors and Artistic Committee includes Broadway star Ciara Renee, film and TV actor Spencer Garrett, theatre technician and not-for-profit foundation president Jason Aufdem-Brinke, director Krysta Hibbard, and company founder Yvonne Cone. The Board also welcomes The Public Theater's Chukwudi Iwuji, to the Advisory Board. Drama Desk Award Nominated Director and Flea Resident Director, Anne Cecelia Haney, comes on board as the company's first Resident Director. SSC will be hosting "SSChillz," a casual cocktail meet & greet for the public to spend an evening with members of the company, to be held at Little Rascal located at 163 Elizabeth Street in Manhattan, on Monday April 30, 2018 from 7PM to 11PM. Bar proceeds go to SSC's next production and attendees will receive discounts to 2018/2019 shows.
Shrunken Shakespeare Company develops provocative adaptations of classics, as well as refreshing original works. As an ensemble-driven company, SSC employs a colorful collective of established and emerging International Artists to evoke the audience's curiosity and inspire social engagement. Each play is a collaboration that fosters interactive, narrative-focused storytelling. Actors and audiences are guided toward an open dialogue, while bridging the gap between conventional expectations and the stage's limitless possibilities.
Previously, SSC has been known for the New York premiere of Paul Sorvino's Lear, directed by and starring himself, along with Bedlam's Eric Tucker and Stephan Wolfert, and the Royal Shakespeare Company's Chukwudi Iwuji. the company also produced a workshop of Chukwudi Iwuji's screenplay, Ira, about the life of Ira Aldridge, the first African American actor to star on The West End, the cast of which included such stars as Madeline Brewer, James Waterston, Condola Rashad, Tom O'Keefe, Michael Stahl-David, and many more. Last seen onstage was the company's workshop production of What We Know - An American Retelling of Three Sisters, a nine-month process in adapting Chekhov's classic.
